This book is absolutely fabulous! Told in dual points of view--one in verse, one in prose--both characters are well-developed and share a part of their lives distinctly different than the other. Although this is set in the future, this "dystopian" sets it apart from others in the genre. I loved that it was set in India, and that the portrayal of this future could actually be a real possibility with the gender selection happening today.
I felt like I really got to know these characters and their backgrounds--so different from each other. In a world where past gender selection has led to an imbalance in genders (5 boys for every 1 girl), the boys must compete for a wife. Sudasa, as a girl, has lived a life of privilege while Contestant 5 is merely a working boy who has to compete with four other boys to win her hand in marriage. He doesn't actually want to win a wife, and she doesn't really want a husband. They are thrown together, and as they both try to thwart the other, they see that they may have more in common than they realize.
As we get to know both characters, we discover more about their families and what kind of future they both want to fight to secure.
The flow of words is just beautiful! It's a fast read, but it packs quite a punch! You'll remember these characters and this world long after you close the book! Here's hoping there's a sequel!

5 to 1 Holly Bodger 9780385391535 Books Reviews

It was a very good book but it had lots of type o's in the book she said she had an editor.
Loved it so much. Such a fantastic novel and can't wait till bookmark with the author about this book. Fantastic.
a good story, but could've been more developed in my opinion. still worth a read!
I gave this 3.75 stars but I wanted so badly to give it 4 or even 4.5. The truth is, there just wasn't enough content to give it anything higher.

I LOVED the story. It wasn't anything super new, I mean there are tons of plots like it. But it was still unique in a lot of ways and I enjoyed reading this story and I'm so glad I got to read it. The plot was interesting, the characters were interesting, I loved that it was all about Indian culture, there were so many things to love about it. There were some major problems tho.

So the book was about 250 pages long. But actually, the author wrote the story so that there were only
about four words per
line. Then, she would
hit enter, and start
a new line. Like this.

So obviously, that means that there is only text on about a third of the page. Then, sometimes she would write even less.

Like, she might say
that the character sat
d
o
w
n
So now, she has one letter per line. With the ENTIRE book being written in this format, the truth is that if the story was written in a normal format it would only be about a hundred pages. Which was pretty frustrating as I spent about $12 on this book. Also, I felt lied to because it said it was a novel, and I payed for a novel, but actually, it was a short story.
And because it had such little content, it didn't have very much meat to it. Basically every element of the story could have used A LOT more development and material. And the ending, it was a bit like hitting a brick wall. She made a decision and then it ended. We didn't actually get to see her do it, carry it out, see how it would effect anyone, or even if it was successful or if she just died. It just ended. I mean, we could have seriously used a better ending --- because it didn't end.

That being said, I loved this story, I'm so glad I read it, and I highly recommend it to anyone reading this. But maybe don't buy it new. Cause it's a short story, not a novel - even though it says it is.

Favorite Character

Sudasa’s father – His backstory is heartbreaking, his gentle spirit is sweet, and his love for his daughter(s) is a gentle reminder that the pressures of society aren’t always reflected in individual people. Plus, I love that we realize he hasn’t let the system get him down quite as much as Nani thinks.

Favorite Line

There are so many! If nothing else, this book is beautifully written, alternating free verse and prose, Sudasa’s and Kiran’s voices. It’s really difficult to pick a single sample!

Fun Author Fact

Holly Bodger works on both sides of the book world – as a published author and in publishing.

Is this worth a book hangover?

5 to 1 is a quick read with its beautiful descriptions, quiet poetry, and quick-moving story. The characters are easy to like, if not always to understand and the world Bodger creates is a compelling one. There may be some difficulty understanding exactly what happens because of the imagery in the poetry, but I still think this is an important story that captures what the world could easily look like very soon.
